Ceramics
Charlie Pfitzer is a master potter who creates functional ceramics that are thrown or slab built. Pfitzer then uses the surface of the pottery to experiment with abstract compositions: "I treat the surface in much the same manner as I do my watercolors," says Pfitzer. He uses between five to ten different glazes that are dipped, poured, brushed or sprayed. The overlapping glazes combine with gravity as they melt to create visual surface textures. "I use transparent and opaque along with contrasting glazes that merge and overlap to blend and give the surface the illusion of depth and movement," says Pfitzer as he moves around the studio adding another layer of glaze to several pieces: "Many of the pieces are glazed more than once and re-fired to add to and refine the composition and colors."
Pfitzer's process creates pieces where the surface appears to glow with extraordinary combinations of color and textures that float and flow together to draw you into his unique visual world of functional art.
Painting
"DURING MY CAREER, I SPENT MANY HOURS TRAVELING, WHERE I OBSERVED THE PANORAMIC BEAUTY OF OUR COUNTRY. THE VIEWS OF LANDSCAPES AND BUILDINGS HAS INFLUENCED MY APPROACH TO THE WAY MY ABSTRACT PAINTINGS COME TOGETHER."
